JobReady in Waltham Forest

Jackie Power, a single mother from Chingford, Waltham Forest, had been working as a self-employed cleaner before she was referred to L&Q’s JobReady employment and training service in August 2015.

“I was staggering along and needed to get more work but I was a bit scared that I might not be around enough for my kids and that I wouldn’t find a full-time job that paid enough, as part of my income came from in-work benefits. L&Q recommended I speak with their JobReady employment support team and at first I was a bit hesitant, as I didn’t really believe they could help me. I nearly didn’t go to my first appointment because I assumed it would be a waste of time.”

JobReady’s support team offered Jackie the chance to take a range of courses to boost her qualifications and employability, as well as an English and Maths assessment. She was also helped to find suitable jobs and shown upcoming opportunities at L&Q.

“The support was great. Within reason I could have done any course I wanted and was set to get some qualifications when this Caretaker role came up. I thought, ‘I like the sound of that,’ and, with some encouragement, I went for it.”

Jackie’s JobReady caseworker prepared her for the Caretaker job interview with advice and mock interview practise, as well as helping her to get some new smart clothes to wear on the day.

“Before the interview I felt excited and nervous at the same time because it was a job I wanted and knew I could do. I was really pleased when I got a phone call two weeks later to say I had got it.”

L&Q’s JobReady service helped her to find a new full-time job by November, just three months after she was referred to the service. Today Jackie enjoys her work as a Caretaker for L&Q in Haggerston where she is responsible for looking after an estate called Kingsland Wharf. She is keen to recommend JobReady to any L&Q resident who maybe in the same situation she was and wanting to improve their circumstances.

“I absolutely love the job and get on well with all the residents, who are very pleased with how nice and clean I keep the estate. I think the work that L&Q do with JobReady is amazing and would say to any L&Q resident who is unhappy about their job or prospects to get in touch with the JobReady team. That service is there for you and more people should make use of it.”
