New Youth Bank project launched in Merton and Sutton

Jun 22 2010

Youth bank projectL&Q’s Youthbank project involves working with young people to set up a ‘Youth Bank panel’ who are then responsible for administrating funds in the local community. The project involves training and supporting local young people as they set up the youth bank and offer support and help to young people applying for grants.
The Youth Bank Panel will be tasked with approving applications for funding from local young residents for projects that will improve their neighbourhood.

The application process for this funding is now open and those interested should contact the Sharon Heslop on 0844 406 9000 for further information.

An L&Q Youth Bank has already been running successfully in Enfield for several years where more than £8,000 has been allocated to sport and dance programmes and local youth clubs.

The Merton and Sutton Youth Bank will run initially as an 18 month project but if it proves to be successful it is possible that the scheme will be rolled out across other boroughs.

The project is organised, managed and funded by L&Q with additional funding and support provided by Axis, Merton Council and Merton Priory Homes.

Sharon Heslop, Neighbourhood Investment Officer from L&Q said: “This project not only directly benefits the community through the investment, but the Youth Bank members also learn about financial responsibility and the importance of working as a team to make judgments. We are really looking forward to developing this project and have already received a considerable amount of interest from young residents which is extremely positive.

“The funding from our partners is great news for L&Q’s Youthbank and will greatly contribute to the work of this fantastic project. The Youthbank works hard to increase the confidence, self esteem and skills of young people in Merton & Sutton and the sponsorship we have received will help to continue this work and we thank our partners for their support.”
