A young L&Q resident has found full-time work with one of L&Q’s contractors with our support.

Craig moved into L&Q’s Slough Foyer in November 2008 after leaving his family home. Then 23, Craig was not engaged in any training, education or employment. But he did have a passionate interest in construction and was determined to get himself back on track and achieve something.

Craig was job-hunting for over six months but always hit dead ends. Then he heard about a six-week construction work placement with our contractor Mears. Initially he was determined to get a ‘real job’ rather than a work placement. But he was persuaded to give it a go, made a great impression, and has since been offered and accepted a full-time job with the firm.

Reading Community Radio recently interviewed Craig about his experiences. He said: “I am now able to provide for my one-year-old daughter and take driving lessons. Overall I feel more confident and have faith in the system.”

Aisha Chaudhry, Neighbourhood Investment Officer, said: “Some young people face difficulties in their lives that can have knock-on effects when it comes to getting training or employment. This is a true success story of someone who has kept going even after hitting so many dead ends.”
